A sea freight container for international (as well as domestic) transportation is a reusable unit of transport equipment. The design of a sea freight container provides safe transportation of goods by one or more modes of transport, which is ensured by the strength of the sea container during the established service life.

Regardless of the purpose, all containers are standardized in terms of gross weight, dimensions, connecting dimensions, as well as in terms of the design of devices connecting to the rolling stock on a railway, motor transport and to the gripping bodies of loading and unloading machines. This makes it possible to carry out various modes of transportations with a minimum of time and labor by various modes of transport, exercising the door-to-door delivery principle.

The main types of containers used in transportation are sea containers of standard sizes IC and ICC and also IA and IAA. The ICC and IAA sizes are 2591 mm (8.5 ft.) and the IC and IA sizes are 2438 mm (8.0 ft.). This circumstance also determines a higher tariff for transportation through the territory of the railways with the same static load.

The most important operational parameters of containers are internal dimensions, such as the width of the doorway (2286 mm), height (for ICC and IAA — 2261 mm, for IC and IA — 2134 mm) and internal volume, as well as the mass of the transported cargo, which, together with container tare, is the gross weight.
